Emille Joson' s Filipino horror short film resurrected by #MeToo. Became a sleeper hit in America
Adivino short film has crawled out of the grave to bask in the glory of a new, more open-minded generation.
Award Winning Writer/Director Emille Joson's beauty has been adored both locally and internationally - undeniably - but this young filmmaker prove to us again that she's more than just a pretty face.
As per NYC article sources, back in October 2017, journalists Megan Twohey, Jodi Kantor and Ronan Farrow published a New York Times article that slayed the stories of several women’s encounters with Harvey Weinstein and his inappropriate, traumatic sexual advances which mostly turned into actual unconsented sexual acts of harassment, threats, assault, and even rape.
This blown up the #MeToo movement, which gave victims of sexual abuse the confidence to stand up against their abusers, and gave a voice for many who felt repressed, bullied and unheard. The movement is now changing the face of cinema in America and other countries. Although in Philippines sexy bold films and oversexualization are still a thing that every women wanted to change. Only a few network and film productions would show women empowering films.
But in September 2021, Joson's 10 years ago Filipino short film Adivino became sleeper hit on streaming platforms both in asian and western countries. Huge Hollywood stars commended the artist during her birthday after her zoom interview at L.A. Though in a pre-MeToo era, the implication of Adivino storyline centered a priest abusing women and female friendship destroyed by fortune-telling betrayal is already familiar as Joson described the inspiration of it was the '90s Patrizia Reggiani mixed Monica Lewinsky controversies. A completely panned by Catholic viewers, a forgotten critically-acclaimed mini-film that opened doors for her in the local film industry out of many nominations is now making rounds in Hollywood. Joson has been receiving gifts from huge A-List stars since, and social media followings.
The 29-year-old artist is still advocating Women and LGBT rights today. Adivino is a truly enjoyable work of art.
